Our rich history plays an important role in how we operate and see ourselves. We consider the firm to be a mature and responsible member of our industry and the communities in which we live and operate. Today's events and projects will form the history and legacy for future MIG generations.
1910 - Mr. C.A. Jones, O.L.S., Civil Engineer, our earliest predecessor, had been practicing engineering and surveying in the Lambton area since 1910.
1928 - The name Monteith arrived in Lambton County in 1928, when James Clarence Monteith, O.L.S., D.L.S., P.Eng. moved his family to Petrolia to enter a partnership with fellow Ontario Land Surveyor, Mr. C.A. Jones.
1930 - Following the Depression years in the 1930's, J.C. Monteith served as the Lambton County Road Engineer, administrating the Province of Ontario's Highway Improvement Act, as well as maintaining private practice. The roads in Lambton County were not the roads we see today in this area. Each spring, Mr. Monteith would have to deploy his seasonal force of farmers, driving team scrapers to bring the rugged clay roads into a reasonable form, whereby normal summer traffic could gain access to the rural areas.
1941 - As County Engineer, Mr. Monteith was responsible for paving Plank Road, which the County had taken over from the Sarnia Florence Plank Road Company. It had been the last toll road in Ontario, and received heritage designation in 1994, after being submitted by MIG Engineering Ltd. to the Ontario Good Roads Centennial Committee.
1950 - J.C. Monteith retired as Lambton County engineer to devote all his efforts to private practice. During his distinguished career, he was recognized as playing a major role in the draining of what was Lake Wawanosh and Lake Smith, two significant former lakes in Sarnia Township and Bosanquet Township respectively.
1956 - Son, James A. Monteith (Jim) returned from a work term in Australia and New Zealand to start picking up the professional engineering reins from his father and formed J.A. Monteith and Associates.
1959 - Gary Ingram, whom Jim had met in New Zealand, joined him. Their office was located at 811 London Road, in the former Sarnia Township. The future MIG was born.
1961 - Jim and Gary formed the consulting engineering firm of Monteith-Ingram Engineering Limited. This firm attained recognition providing primarily civil engineering services to all levels of government, industry and the private sector. A significant amount of provincial and municipal funding was directed toward road and bridge infrastructure at this time. Many Lambton County clients relied on Monteith-Ingram to provide the design and construction services for these important transportation projects. Throughout the 1960's, Monteith-Ingram Engineering Limited and Jim's drainage business, J.A. Monteith and Associates were located under one roof in Petrolia.
1972-1975 - Jim had learned the technique of preparing rural drainage reports from his father. During the years 1972 to 1974, he served as a consultant to the Ontario Legislative Select Committee On Land Drainage which reviewed existing drainage legislation and its application. The recommendations as set out in the Committee's Report formed the basis for the present Drainage Act of 1975. Rural Drainage has been a significant part of Monteith-Ingram's engineering practice since the inauguration by the Province of Ontario of the Municipal Drainage Act. The 1970's were a busy time for Monteith-Ingram as sewage and water infrastructure were designed and built in many Lambton County municipalities.
1984 - Bill Graham (who began with the company in 1968 as a University of Waterloo co-op student) became a principal in what was now Monteith Ingram Graham Ltd.
1986 - Monteith Ingram Graham opened an office in Sarnia.
1988 - Jim retired as a shareholder, concentrating on J.A. Monteith and Associates providing specialized drainage to county clients.
1991 - Monteith Ingram Graham Limited became MIG Engineering Ltd. Bill Graham and Gary Ingram welcomed Marty Raaymakers as an associate to the firm joining Marc Dupuis, Peter Meharg, Jamie Monteith and Neil Sinclair as company shareholders.
1992 - MIG acquired James Magee, currently Magee Architectural Design, a well established commercial and residential custom building design firm, and opened an office in London, Ontario with Gary Ingram as manager for the first few years. MIG's additional location at 780 - 795 Dufferin Ave. in London allows MIG to better serve Southwestern Ontario.
1994 - Universal Terrain Mapping (UTM) Inc., a partner in the Province of Ontario's new POLARIS program, which has computerized the registry and land title systems was formed to focus on the Geomatics industry, supplying specialized mapping to the province and land information services in domestic and international markets. UTM is 50% owned by MIG Engineering Ltd.
1995 - T.W. (Bill) Graham, P. Eng. and President of MIG Engineering Ltd. and Peter K. Meharg, P. Eng. a Senior Structural/Civil Engineer and Associate with the firm were both accepted by the Michigan Board of Professional Engineers to practice Engineering in the States.
